Volunteer at an IB Workshop!

February 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars Community,

The city of Miami Beach is still looking for volunteers to help out with A/V during the IB Workshops at the Miami Beach Convention Center March 27 and 28.

They are now reducing the committment from two days to one.  If you are able to help out from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, it would be a great opportunity to see firsthand how our teachers are preparing for the International Baccalaureate program.

I’ve also heard their lunches are phenomenal.

If you are interested, please email Joanna Quintana at jquintana1@dadeschools.net.

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Boston Trip

February 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars,

The Scholars Academy trip to Boston over April break will not take place this year due to insufficient response.  I understand this is a difficult year for many and that the cost was substantial.

I want to extend a special thanks to the Kramer family for helping us plan the trip; we now have all of the information we need to hit the ground running next year.  I will convene a meeting in the fall of 2009, do my best to get early commitments, and start fundraising as soon as possible to offset the cost.

If you are still looking to visit colleges this summer on a budget, a program called QuestBridge offers full scholarship summer programs, in addition to free school visits and college counseling.  I personally know several Ivy League graduates who went through this amazing program.  Their website is www.questbridge.org and you can view their flyer here: (2009_cps_flyer).

Have a wonderful [educational] spring break, whatever [homework] you do!

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Dear Scholars Community,

I wanted to give advance notice that our March 5 advisory board meeting will focus on the International Baccalaureate Program.  Drs Karp, Rosenfeld and Sidener will all be in attendance to answer your questions.  The meeting will take place at 7:30 AM in the MBSH Media Center.

Our guests have asked for advance copies of any questions that you might have so they can prepare thoroughly for the meeting.  Please feel free to comment back on this post if you are viewing it as a webpage, or to reply to this message if you are receiving it as an email.  I will compile all responses and forward them to the participants at the end of the week.

See you soon!

Class of 2013

February 23, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars Community,

As I have said before, the class of 2013 will be the largest in Scholars Academy history, with a grand total of 100 freshmen.

We have now filled all 100 spaces, and I have begun to compile a waitlist.  Qualified applicants will come off the list in the order that their completed applications are received, so it is important for families to submit applications and transcripts, if necessary, as soon as possible.

The online application is available here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=MtmHBSZ4L90jpMWHdGNqEQ_3d_3d

Each year, some accepted students elect to enroll in private high schools or selective magnet programs instead of the Scholars Academy.  I anticipate that spaces will open up once MAST, DASH and New World begin accepting students in mid-March.

Additionally, I have asked all accepted students to confirm their placement by March 31.  I should be able to give a more defininitive answer to all students on the waitlist at that time.

Congrats again to the class of 2013!  Stay tuned for an open house in the spring.

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

IB Training Volunteers

February 10, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars Community,

The City of Miami Beach has organized a round of IB training sessions for Miami Beach teachers in March and is looking for volunteers to assist with audio and video during the workshops.

As a volunteer, you will be able to sit in on the training sessions that our teachers are attending.  This would be a great opportunity for any parent looking to learn more about International Baccalaureate and the authorization process.

The workshops will be in the Miami Beach Convention Center from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM on March 27 and 28, and volunteers would have to be available to help out both days for the entire time.  If you are interested in volunteering and learning more about IB, please email Joanna Quintana at jquintana1@dadeschools.net or call her office at 305.995.4245.

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss
