Dear Scholars Executive Board,

Our e-board meeting has been rescheduled to Monday, October 6 in room 280 during lunch.  Pizza will be provided.  If you can’t make it, that’s because you didn’t upload your meeting schedule to the events tab in the My Scholars Academy social network.  Please do this ASAP.

Events Calendar

September 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars,

It has come to my attention that Scholars Academy club meetings are conflicting with the meetings of other clubs to which Scholars belong.

I don’t intend to monopolize your time, so this Friday’s executive board meeting will be postponed.

The events tab is a place on the My Scholars Academy social network is a place where anyone can post an event to publicize it for other members of the Scholars community.  If you know of an event that other Scholars might benefit from attending, please post it here: http://scholarsacademy.ning.com/events

I would kindly ask the officers of all honor societies, service clubs or activities to which Scholars generally belong to post your upcoming meetings on the events calendar once they are scheduled.  This way more members of the Scholars community will see your events, and it will be easier for club officers and advisors to avoid conflicts.

I will reschedule the executive board meeting for a day that has no events posted, once everyone has a chance to post their meeting schedules.  I will do this over the weekend, so please post your events soon!

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Back to School Night

September 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Parents,

This Tuesday is Miami Beach Senior High’s Back to School Night. The Student Government Association will be selling refreshments for those coming directly from work.

Dr. Sidener will be addressing everyone in attendance in our newly inaugurated auditorium at 6:15 PM.  Immediately following her speech, you will have the opportunity to visit all of your student’s teachers.

I will be holding a very informal reception in my journalism classroom (Room 3562) from 5:45 until 6:10.  Students will be on hand to help parents register for the My Scholars Academy social network.  I will also try my best to help anyone who shows up navigate the dadeschools.net Parent Portal (at the very least, I can direct you to ITS if all else fails).

I look forward to seeing everyone there!

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Grant Writing Workshop Date Set

September 18, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars Community,

Thanks so much to everyone who expressed interest in the grant writing workshop with Maria Ruiz.  Our school social worker, Sasha Aaronson, has informed me that the workshop will take place on Friday, October 24 from 9-1.  I will post it as an event on the My Scholars Academy social network, and anyone interested in attending can RSVP.

I think this will be a truly invaluable event for anyone interested in raising funds or learning about how grants work.  The 24th is a teacher workday, so students will also be able to make it.  I will definitely be in attendance and hope to see you there.

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

PSAT for Freshmen

September 17, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Freshmen,

The subject of the PSAT came up in today’s Curriculum Council meeting.  While MDCPS no longer pays for freshmen to take the exam, it might behoove you to register and get the practice in for future years.

Registration is $13 cash, exact change.  Please visit Ms Sevillanos’ office (352) during lunch only to sign up.

The deadline is September 22.

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Grant Writing Workshop

September 15, 2008 · 3 Comments

Dear Scholars Community,

Maria Ruiz, who writes grants for the City of Miami Beach, is willing to hold a school-oriented grant writing workshop at MBSH if a minimum of 4 people are willing to attend.

This would be an invaluable opportunity for us to begin to raise funds, and I think it is very important that we be represented.  Even if no one else in the whole school signs up, I would like to get at least three parents to sign up to accompany me, so we can be sure to take advantage of this resource.

If you are in interested in helping us raise money for the academy, or just willing to be a warm body in attendance, please get in touch with me as soon as possible by commenting back to this post or by sending me a message over the My Scholars Academy social network.

Thanks!

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Meeting Pizza

September 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars,

This is a happy reminder that attendance is mandatory for our inaugural SA Club meeting on September 11 during lunch in room 3562.

I am even happier to report that the Kramer/Etkin-Kramer family has offered to purchase pizza for meeting attendees – so you don’t even have to worry about lunch!

Thank you!

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Community Service Hours

September 9, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Seniors,

Ms Sahwell has requested me to remind you to kindly turn in your community service forms as soon as possible.  If you are applying for a Bright Futures scholarship (and I hope that you are), these forms must be in Mr DeVarona’s hands by the end of September.

Here is the form: community_service

I know that Ms Sevillanos is calling each of you in to verify your graduation requirements.  Let’s make it a game: can you turn in your forms before Ms Sevillanos finds you?

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss
