Last Minute Summer Opportunity

June 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars,

This just came in from a friend of mine:

“LEAD Program is a nationally recognized program that offers talented minority students an opportunity to learn about the work of finance and banking through a three-week summer program in conjunction with 11 of the top business programs in the country.

This year LEAD is kicking off an engineering program.  The students will spend 3 weeks at Georgia Tech or UC Berkeley in an engineering course.  It is a great opportunity for students of color who are thinking about engineering (the program was paid for through a grant by the Department of Energy).  At the reception tonight for the business program, the director mentioned that they are in desperate need to females that are “rising 11th graders” (11th grade in the fall) who are interested in engineering for the program this summer.”

If anyone is interested, the website is www.leadprogram.org.

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss

Things to do this summer for college

June 4, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Dear Scholars,

I spoke to Mrs. Sahwell this morning and she has a list of things for each of you to do this summer with regards to your college search, sorted by grade:

Incoming Freshmen:

  1. Compile a short biography of yourself.
  2. Compile a resume of your academic achievements, including your GPA, number of quarters on the honor roll, etc.
  3. Compile a resume of your extracurricular activites, going back to middle school.

Rising Sophomores:

  1. Do the same as the incoming freshmen, if you haven’t yet already.
  2. Begin to research colleges and universities.
  3. Make a list of 6 colleges you would be happy attending, specifically: two that are admissions stretches for you, two that generally fit your academic profile, and two that you would consider “safety” schools.
  4. Begin to visit some of these colleges.

Rising Juniors:

  1. Do the same as freshmen and sophomores, if you haven’t yet already.
  2. Revisit your academic profile to see if it is consistent with your earlier goals.  Compile a second list of colleges you would be happy attending: two more that are admissions stretches for you, two more that generally fit your academic profile, and two more that you would consider “safety” schools.
  3. Continue to visit the colleges on your list.  See how many you can check off!

Rising Seniors:

  1. Email your biography and resume to msahwell@dadeschools.net.
  2. Begin asking your teachers for college recommendations – they will have more time to personalize them over the summer than they will once everyone returns to school in August.
  3. Download the common application, and the applications of the schools you are considering.  Review the essays carefully, because they often repeat from year to year.  New applications begin to come out July 1.  Brainstorm your essays, and begin to write them if you have the most current application.  You will have an easier time now than you will once your senior year starts.

Take advantage of your time off, and send an email to msahwell@dadeschools.net if you have any questions.

Best Regards,

Andy Weiss
