Scholars Academy students and parents,
Please take the time to read Dr. Page’s summer programs bulletin. These programs are great opportunities to learn in smaller, collegial (and collegiate) settings – and some of them are even funded. If you are interested and need any help with applications or recommendations, please stop by my office in 2803 or comment back to this post and I will find you.
Here is the bulletin: Summer Programs
Best Regards,

This just came in from Office of Community Services:
Deadline: April 18, 2008
As part of its service-learning efforts, insurance company State Farm is accepting applications for associate board member positions on its youth advisory board. The youth advisory board is comprised of thirty young adults between the ages of 17 and 20 from communities across the United States and Canada, with three at-large members representing State Farm’s national service-learning partners. The board’s mission is to create and oversee a signature service-learning initiative to address pressing issues that have a direct impact on communities. The youth board is responsible for identifying these issues, overseeing the site selections and grantmaking process, providing technical assistance to the site grantees, and assisting with communications and outreach.
Students selected to serve on the board will serve as an associate member in 2008, with the option to serve as a board member in 2009.
Associate youth advisory board members receive a $3,000 scholarship toward their postsecondary education at a four-year, two-year, or vocational training program. Board members receive a $5,000 scholarship.
Program information and application forms are available on the State Farm Web site: http://fconline.foundationcenter.org/pnd/10011474/statefarm
You will need two reference letters to complete your application. Feel free to see me if you would like me to write you one. Best of Luck to all Applicants!
Best Regards,
Andy Weiss

This just came in from Talia Robledo-Gil:
SCHOLARS ACADEMY SENIORS!
There are two important announcements:
-The Senior Brunch, a traditional Scholars Academy senior event, will take place on May 18th at the Surf Club. Student admission is free. Each guest will have to pay $40. Payments will be accepted starting in April. More details are to come. Scholars Academy Yearbook
-The Scholars Academy yearbook has been a tradition of the graduating Scholars Academy Class. The yearbook is free and will be given to each Scholars Academy senior at the Senior Brunch.
-Every senior in the Scholars Academy will submit their own page to the yearbook. It may include anything you want, as long as it is not inappropriate.
-The yearbook will be in color, so you may include color pictures.
-Your individual page must be 8 ½ X 11, saved as a JPEG file, and sent as an attachment to the following email address: SAseniors2008@gmail.com
-The page will be due by the end of April
-Name and contact information should be included on the page. In the past, students have included the college they will be attending, a favorite Scholars Academy memory, and/or where they will be in ten years.
-Ryan Cabana will be in charge of the Yearbook committee. If you are interested in being a part of the committee, you may contact Ryan or any Scholars Academy club officer.
Thanks,
Talia Robledo-Gil

From Mr. Guthrie:
“I wanted to let everyone know that our Ocean Science Bowl Team beat 16 other Florida teams (including MAST and Palmetto) to take SECOND PLACE in the East Florida Regional State Competition of the National Ocean Science Bowl held at Harbor Branch, Ft. Pierce, FL on Saturday. They were incredible, winning tough matches in twelve rounds of competition lasting all day, finally losing in the championship match to South Broward. This is the first time our school has placed higher than MAST in our seven years of competition and I was truly proud of them!! The students were one win away from attending the nationals in Alaska. They did win a series of science books for the school and a trip aboard one of Harbor Branch’s ocean research ships for later in the year.”
The team includes:
Andy Bass (captain)
Maurice Oxios
Kyle Rego
Daniel Mejido
Taylor Calibo
Coach: David Guthrie

Dear Scholars Academy Students,
The MDCPS Secondary Geography Bee will be on April 15, 2008. All students can apply, but it would be great if we could field a Scholars Academy team.
We can sponsor a team of 5 members and 1 alternate to compete against other schools in the district. If you are interested in forming a team, please comment back to this post with your name and grade. If more than 5 but less than 10 people respond, we will hold a qualifying competition.
For more information, you can find rules, sample questions and registration forms here:

If you simply want to test your Geography knowledge, allow me to recommend an addictive internet-based game at http://www.travelpod.com/traveler-iq. See if you can convince a teacher to let you use the smart board after school, and let me know if any of you can beat Level 12!
